Heading to Plymouth for Thanksgiving

This is an early representation of the very first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, MA. It depicts our countries first immigrants sharing a meal with the countries native people.

It’s hard to imagine the first interactions between these very different groups of people. Through the years we have read lots of books about Native Americans, the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. We have also done lots of great Thanksgiving craft and “thankful” projects.

But this year, I think our family will get a whole new understanding and appreciation for the holiday on our visit to the Plimoth Plantation.

Located in Plymouth, MA, Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum. A English Village, Wampanoag Homesite and full size replica of the Mayflower are some of the sites we will get to visit. English role players and descendants from Wampanoag Nation, dressed in traditional 17th century clothing, “live” at the Plantation and engage in the same activities they did back when that first Thanksgiving took place.

The kids and I will do a small writing and drawing project before we go and again on the way home.

I think it will be interesting for us to see how our experience at Plimoth will expand our thinking about Thanksgiving.
